“Hi it’s Dr. Hadeed. We’re gonna talk a little bit more about breast implants and specifically the difference between silicone versus saline implants, because this is a question comes up a lot during consultations.
Patients always ask, “Well what are the differences between the two, and which one should i get?”
Now in a nutshell, the difference between saline and silicone implants is what’s on the inside of the implant, because the outer shell or covering of a saline implant and a silicone implant is exactly the same. So the difference is what’s on the inside.
A saline implant has saline in it, or salt water, and a silicone implant has medical grade silicone. So silicone has more of a consistency like a syrup or molasses. It’s a lot thicker, and because of that, silicone implants generally tend to have more of a natural look and more of a natural feel compared to saline implants.
Ultimately, it does come down to the wishes and desires of the patient as far as which type of implant they want. However, most women in the United States do choose to have silicone implants over saline, and in my own personal practice our preference is to put silicone implants over saline implants, because the patient satisfaction rate tends to be higher with silicone implants.”
